About the artwork

Memories form the stories of our lives, leaving us with grandiose images beyond the reach of reality. The mind sentimentalizes the past and transforms sacred moments into their full power. Through painting, I aim to give life to these storied memories and create worlds which are recognizable through the shared imaginative space of our minds.

I first started down this path with old windows as I discovered each one was a story of its own. Over time I realized it was not the windows themselves that sparked my interest but their position as natural storytellers with their ability to focus one’s point of view. What I continue to search for are the most meaningful stories of all: memories, both fiercely unique yet profoundly universal. A shabby backyard tree from childhood can be transformed into a dark cyan Oak, awaiting its next great adventure. Though the childhood trees may differ from person to person, the connection will remain the same. As these memories turn into stories, they become eternal, passed down through the voices of those who lived them, to those who heard them, and finally, to those who treasure them. A house that was once a home, but was lost to time, still lives on in the bright memory of the light seeping through the front door.

The darkest times are often matched with the greatest need for escape. Slipping away into powerful memories allows one to suspend time for a moment; briefly living in story. I hope my work sparks a sense of familiar nostalgia in the viewer, giving them a craving for their own treasured stories and a gentle push to step in and escape.
